Summer University
University Summer Program offers non-English majors at Showa Women's University, Tokyo the opportunity to study the English language and learn about American culture in Boston. The University Summer Program runs in July and August, and is an excellent opportunity for cultural enrichment and learning conversational English. There are several components to the program which are listed below.
Conversation Course
This class meets every morning for one and a half hours. The primary purpose of this course is to involve students in a variety of interesting, communicative activities which will allow them to:
  • Improve their speaking and listening skills.
  • Improve their pronunciation.
  • Learn and practice language structures related to everyday activities such as shopping, meeting people, casual conversations, ordering in a restaurant, traveling, entertainment, etc.
  • Learn new vocabulary related to these activities.
  • Process their experiences and language learning through the use of a journal, which takes the form of a Boston Scrapbook.
  • Meet and talk with Guest Speakers.
Focused English
This class meets every morningfor one and a half hours. Students are grouped in this class according to their major field of interest. We have six fields of study in the summer program. Students are from the Children's Education, Food and Nutrition, Volunteering, Museums, Psychology and Cultural Interest departments. This class will focus on vocabulary designed for their specific needs and related to the afternoon speciliazed activities.
Excursions
These include weekday field trips to Plimoth Plantation, Concord, Salem, the Museum of Fine Arts and other Boston area museums for all the students.
Special Programs
Special programs are offered in cooperation with Showa Women's University, Tokyo's departments of Living Sciences and Social Welfare. Students combine language study and excursions with special lectures and site visits to study their special interests.
